TESTING & CERTIFICATION

Ultrasonic Testing (UT)

Ultrasonic testing (UT) comprises a range of non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques that send ultrasonic waves through an object or material. These high frequency sound waves are transmitted into materials to characterise the material or for flaw detecting. Most UT inspection applications use short pulse waves with frequencies ranging from 0.1-15 MHz, although frequencies up to 50 MHz can be used. One common application for this test method is ultrasonic thickness measurement, which is used to ascertain the thickness of an object such as when assessing pipework corrosion.

Magnetic Particle Testing (MPT)

Magnetic Particle Testing (MPT), also referred to as Magnetic Particle Inspection, is a nondestructive examination (NDE) technique used to detect surface and slightly subsurface flaws in most ferromagnetic materials such as iron, nickel, and cobalt, and some of their alloys. Because it does not necessitate the degree of surface preparation required by other nondestructive test methods, conducting MPT is relatively fast and easy. This has made it one of the more commonly utilized NDE techniques.

Liquid/ Dye Penetrant Testing (LPT/DPT)

Dye penetrant inspection (DP), also called liquid penetrate inspection (LPI) or penetrant testing (PT), is a widely applied and low-cost inspection method used to check surface-breaking defects in all non-porous materials (metals, plastics, or ceramics). The penetrant may be applied to all non-ferrous materials and ferrous materials, although for ferrous components magnetic-particle inspection is often used instead for its subsurface detection capability.

Ultrasonic Thickness Testing (UTH)

Ultrasonic Testing uses high frequency sound waves to measure the thickness or internal structure of a test item. These high frequency sound waves are directional, and travel through materials such as steel until they encounter a boundary with another medium, at which point they reflect back to the transducer. By analyzing these sounds waves, it is possible to measure the thickness of an item, or potentially find evidence of flaws and discontinuities, while discounting reflections from normal (geometric) indications.

Visual Testing (VT)

Visual testing (VT) is also known as visual testing examination, nondestructive inspection, or nondestructive evaluation or examination. Visual testing is the most common nondestructive testing method. Visual testing is a popular NDT method, because it is so easy to perform, it is a low-cost method, and it requires minimal equipment. VT involves observing a component with the naked eye to evaluate the presence of surface discontinuities. VT can be assisted with optical instruments such as magnifying glasses, boroscopes, mirrors, and other computer equipment for remote viewing.

Vibration Testing

Vibration testing of a system is usually undertaken for the purpose of parameter or system identification. If the object is linear, a great deal of information can be obtained from such tests. This is discussed elsewhere in the encyclopedia. However, when the system is nonlinear the general identification procedure is much more complicated and detailed models are often impossible to obtain. Nevertheless, it is still important to ascertain what operating conditions may lead to an unacceptable type of response. The purpose of this article is to present guidelines for testing systems that may be nonlinear and thus behave in unpredictable ways, i.e., unlike a linear system.

Rebound Hammer Testing

Concrete Test Hammers are also known as Swiss Hammers, Schmidt Hammers, or Rebound Hammers. They are versatile tools for assessing the quality of hardened concrete. Although commonly used to estimate in-place compressive strength, concrete test hammers can provide much more value. The complete evaluation of a concrete structure or pavement is about more than just strength. The hammers are portable and easy to use, and their long history of widespread use means that performance and results are well understood.
